Millions to the Niels Bohr International Academy

The Niels Bohr International Academy has just received 2.5 million DKK from the Ib Henriksen Foundation. The international academy is a new center under the Niels Bohr Institute; its purpose is to improve the Niels Bohr Institute’s practice of working internationally with physics research. The money will be used to employ American guest professors.

Poul Henrik Damgaard“The donation enables us to offer guest professorships to selected American top researchers. This is a fantastic new possibility” says Senior Lecturer Poul Henrik Damgaard who is heading the Niels Bohr International Academy.

The Niels Bohr Institute receives many inquiries from American physicists who wish to spend a year at the institute in Copenhagen.

Within the American university system there is a tradition for ‘sabbaticals’ that makes it possible to travel to another university every 7th year while still maintaining a substantial part of their salary. The donation from the Ib Henriksen Foundation makes it possible to act quickly and offer full guest professorships to the American researchers.

More millions
Earlier in the year the new international academy received a donation of 5 million DKK from the Knud Højgaard Foundation. The grant is in the form of a scholarship that makes it possible to establish 2 five-year research positions for the period 2008-2012.

Also, one million DKK has been donated by the Ernst and Vibeke Husman Foundation. The money is earmarked for international conferences and the special Niels Bohr Summer Institutes; these are workshops where researchers from all over the world can meet and discuss the latest scientific findings and results.

The Niels Bohr International Academy opens officially on November 29th.
