A Shot in the Dark: Searching for Dark Matter with LZ

In this talk I'll give a broad overview of the dark matter field, centering on the direct detection searches for dark matter with a mass above 5 GeV/c^2. The LZ experiment is a liquid xenon time projection chamber located at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota, USA, that is newly online with a focus on this search region. With glimpses of LZ's commissioning data and early performance, I will present projections of the LZ scientific reach. In addition, I will give an insider's view of what short term developments to watch for in the field, and what future experiments we should plan for.
