Journal cover to Ph.D. student for encapsulating Ibuprofen

X-ray and Neutron Science:

PhD student, Charalampos Tsekeridis in the X-ray and Neutron Science group at the Niels Bohr Institute, has got a journal cover for his work on creating microantibubbles to encapsulate Ibuprofen.

Taste-masking in medicines and tablets has great importance, and e.g. Ibuprofen is known for its bitter taste, which for some can make it unpleasant to consume. With this in mind we developed this system first for taste masking and also to improve solubility, says Charalampos Tsekeridis.

Taking advantage of what we call Pickering stabilization, we created microantibubbles to encapsulate Ibuprofen. This approach is a new and simple method to encapsulate hydrophobic drugs like the widely used Ibuprofen.

We made a solid-in-oil-in-water emulsion using hydrophobized silica 0particles and then passing it through a freeze dryer to remove the oil and the water phase to obtain stable encapsulated Ibuprofen inside the microantibubbles in a powder form.

When solubility is improved, the body can absorb a higher percentage of the drug, potentially reducing the required dosage.
This minimizes side effects, like gastrointestinal irritation, and makes the medication more effective. This is also important for encouraging children and the elderly to take medicine as prescribed.

The next step is now to improve the solubility of Ibuprofen in the encapsulated systems by modifying some experimental parameters.
