Dark Matter
The Universe consists not only of the visible heavenly objects like stars, planets and galaxies - there is also a large amount of invisible matter out there, dark matter. It does not interact with light and is only detectable by its gravity influence on the surroundings. By studying the dynamics of stars, galaxies and the hot gas between galaxies in galaxy clusters the volume and spatial distribution of dark matter can be mapped out.
