NBIA Colloquium by Anders Johansen (Globe Institute, UCPH and Lund Observatory)

We would like to invite you to our next (Zoom) NBIA Colloquia this fall

Friday, Oct. 16 at 3:15 PM

Speaker: Anders Johansen (Globe Institute, UCPH and Lund Observatory)

Title: The Physics of Planet Formation

Abstract: Today astronomers know of more than 4,000 planets orbiting around the Sun and other stars. This sample is large enough that meaningful comparisons can be made between theoretical models of planet formation and the observed planetary systems. I will explain what are believed to be the most important physical processes that allow dust and ice grains around young stars to combine to form planets of a wide range of masses and orbits.

Bio-sketch: Anders Johansen did his Master’s degree at Nordita at the University of Copenhagen. He then moved to Heidelberg where he obtained his PhD degree from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy and Heidelberg University. Anders was a postdoc at Leiden Observatory for two years before he moved to Lund University as an assistant professor. He became full professor in 2015 and was head of the department of astronomy and theoretical physics between 2016 and 2020. Since August 2020 he holds a professorship at the StarPlan section of the GLOBE Institute at the University of Copenhagen. Anders’ research focuses on the formation of planets. He has pioneered dynamical modelling of planetesimal formation by streaming instabilities and for the rapid growth of planets by pebble accretion. He has won several scientific prizes for his work, including the “Otto Hahn Medal” from the Max Planck Society, the “Harold C. Urey Prize” from the American Astronomical Society and the “Göran Gustafsson Prize in Physics” from the Swedish Royal Academy of Science.

The colloquium will be moderated by Mauricio Bustamante and we strongly encourage you to participate actively by asking questions during the talk. Mauricio will briefly remind you how this can be done just before the colloquium starts.

We look forward to seeing you on Friday!
