Neutron star mergers and the r-process nucleosynthesis

The multimessenger detection of GW170817 event has brought us first direct evidence that binary neutron star mergers are promising sites producing elements heavier than iron. Further multi-disciplinary efforts from astrophysics, nuclear physics and particle physics are needed to obtain a full understanding of heavy element production history of the universe. In this talk, I will first briefly introduce current status and some open issues. I will then discuss our recent contributions to a few different aspects, including the effects of neutrino flavor oscillations, potentially new signatures of heavy elements, and impact of natal kick of neutron star binaries on chemical evolution of r-process elements.
