Luca writes:

“In this seminar, I will start by briefly introducing the two fields of measurement-based quantum computing (MBQC) and of variational quantum eigensolvers (VQE). The first one gives a way to perform any kind of quantum computation without resorting to circuits and gates. Rather, a graph state is prepared, and the desired unitary is applied to the initial state by measuring a subset of the qubits. VQEs, on the other side, are quantum-classical hybrid algorithms which became extremely popular in the last years due to their applicability to available quantum computers.

So far, the quantum subroutines of VQEs resorted to the circuit model. We introduce a new kind of variational algorithm, called measurement-based VQE (MB-VQE), which is based on MBQC rather than circuits. From one side, we demonstrate that any VQE can be translated into a MB-VQE, which is advantageous for realizing variational algorithms onto platforms that can efficiently generate graph or cluster states (such as photonic platform). From the other side, we demonstrate that MB-VQE retains other advantages if, instead of simply translating a circuit into the corresponding graph state, we design the graph state by thinking at specific properties that we want to change in a carefully chosen initial state.”
