Most of his life Mr. Bailey was, literally, one-eyed – he lost his left eye during WWl, fighting in France with the Royal Garrison Artillery. He was a war hero, decorated with the British Military Cross as well as the French Croix de Guerre – and his penchant for fighting showed early on: he won the university heavy weight boxing title when studying geology at Cambridge.
Sir Edward Bailey was a professor of geology at University of Glasgow from 1929-37. From 1937-45 he was director of the British Geological Survey.
