Title: Quantum Backreaction Effects in Black Hole Evaporation

AbstractStephen Hawking's seminal result, that black holes emit radiation following a thermal spectrum, suggests that they lose mass and slowly evaporate. However, the derivation is incomplete, as it neglects the backreaction of the radiation on the geometry of spacetime. In this talk, we will present a novel approach to black hole perturbation theory which incorporates backreaction effects to arbitrary order. This framework is based on the reduced phase space formulation and implements the hybrid approach, an intermediate step between a full non-perturbative quantum gravity computation and the semi-classical methods found in the literature. We discuss the application to evaporating black holes, with the aim of deriving systematic quantum corrections to the semi-classical picture.
