Title: On the meaning of infinity in black hole horizons and mass inflation

Abstract: Different types of horizons used to characterize black holes, in particular event horizons and Cauchy horizons, are idealized mathematical definitions that rely on the notion of infinity. Results characterizing properties of these definitions often involve the notion of infinity as well. This is for instance the case of the mass inflation instability associated with Cauchy horizons. In this talk I will argue that, from a physics standpoint, it is desirable to find reformulations of these definitions and results that can be formulated in terms of finite quantities. Mass inflation will be used to illustrate a specific implementation of such a reformulation.
