Stirring and mixing of interacting populations
Abstract
Much of the observed structure in the marine phytoplankton and zooplankton distributions is induced by the stirring by eddies. Such stirring, and associated mixing, affects the interactions between the two populations. Modelling the ecosystem as an excitable medium we consider the conditions under which stirring and mixing enhance (or damp) the excitability, and hence population growth, of the system.
