Celebration in the drill tent

Five hundred meters depth reached today at 6 am/pm!!!

Due to the excellent drill performance, the experienced operators, many days of long working hours, and standard run lengths close to 2 m, 500 m depth was reached today, earlier than most had dared to hope for.

And best of all, the core quality is still outstanding.Today’s logging depth is 502.16 m.

After proper celebration in the drill tent, Sarah served us most excellent lamb-chops, and afterwards, we enjoyed a chocolate-raspberry-cheese cake!

It is very fortunate if the drilling can soon be terminated because summer has arrived to Renland with sunny and warm days.

Temperatures have been steadily rising and went up to -2°C this night (which is at noon local time). Because there is almost no wind it gets very hot inside the tents when the sun shines (and it currently does that all the time).

This morning, the temperature in the kitchen tent was 25°C and in the sleeping tents temperatures can get close to 30°C if doors and windows are closed.

The critical issue is the temperature of the drill tent where the ice core is logged. This morning there were drops of water on the saw when the ice was cut. This is a sign that we are at the temperature limit for ice core processing and tomorrow we will not start drilling until 8 o’clock or even later when temperatures have dropped.
