The winch seems to be back in good shape
In the morning the winch was repaired and the cable was spooled back on the winch under tension. The drill was mounted on the cable and at 3 pm the first ice core came to surface! The winch seems to be back in good shape. All in all the winch repair was done in 28 hours: very fast and efficient operation! The ECM signal shows that we are again entering warmer ice, probably from the early last glacial period. Logging depth is 555.67 m.
Andrea and Niccoló went out digging an impressive 4.1 m deep snow pit 100 m north of camp (next to the A06 drilling site). The pit was sampled at 2.5 cm resolution in Coulter beakers for chemistry and isotopes. In camp some of the large snow drift that piled up yesterday was removed. Apparently we got about 10 cm of snowfall yesterday.
Today is Jan’s birthday (same as Sepp!) that was celebrated with Musk ox burritos for lunch, steak for dinner and a great birthday cake.
Weather: Mostly overcast and a little more snowfall, but also patches of blue sky. Temperatures -8°C to -12°C, wind 0-3 m/s from N.
