Sunday evening sightseeing tour
A few runs were made with the rock drill without the pump. A few additional centimeters of material similar to that of yesterday was retrieved. However, the pull to free the drill was hard, more than 400 kg. We think the drill is sucked into the sediment and that there is a risk of losing the drill if we continue. After this experience it was decided to stop drilling in the basal material.
In total 160 g of basal material has been retrieved with a density 1000-1100 kg/m3. This suggests that the basal material consists mostly of ice mixed with some greyish sand/silt.
The plan for tomorrow is to log the borehole for temperature, and later to attempt directional drilling.
Trip out of camp
After dinner Trevor-Radarcamp-Popp gave us a skidoo tour of the ice cap presenting the best views of the surrounding mountains (waypoints Camp-W110-W108-W067-W004-W008-Camp for insiders). Most impressive views and nice to get out of camp on a Sunday evening under blue sky.
Weather: We are back to sunny, warm, and calm conditions with few high thin clouds. Temperature -5°C to -8°C, wind up to 3 m/s turning from N to S clockwise.
