Title: Generalized symmetries and 2-groups via electromagnetic duality in AdS/CFT
Abstract: In the past decade, our understanding of the richness of global symmetries has grown. When a global symmetry is gauged, the gauge field strength naturally produces a new conserved current of higher rank, a so-called generalized symmetry. When certain anomalies are present, a generalized symmetry and an ordinary symmetry can be linked into a higher symmetry structure known as a 2-group. These beautiful symmetries have realizations in a dual gravity theory via the AdS/CFT correspondence. I will discuss how electromagnetic duality on the gravity side plays a vital role in their realization.
