The main aim of this chapter is to explore the current state of digital communication across and between LAMs. With a multitude of possibilities for digital communication opening up, institutions and professionals need to grapple with how to take advantage of new technologies, while steering clear of pitfalls. In our chapter, we focus on the platforms that are used and the challenges they each present, as well as the tensions that develop between them. Aside from one-way communication, how do these platforms support mediation and participation? What challenges does the current digital communication present for LAMs and their users, and how do LAMs navigate this? By dividing the platforms used by LAMs for digital communication into internal, external, and cross-institutional, the chapter explores opportunities and challenges in digital communication through the concept of platformization.
