Single photons and single photon detectors for quantum communication

 I will give a short introduction to Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and proposals to increase its security (device independent QKD) and its transmission distance (quantum repeaters). I will then discuss which role true single photon sources as developed in Copenhagen can in principle improve the performance of these protocols. Finally, I will present first results from our recent work on Superconducting Nanowire Single Photon Detectors. These detectors can be integrated in photonic waveguide circuits.
