Spin-optomechanics: interfacing spins, photons, and phonons

Optomechanical devices provide opportunities for interfacing light with a wide variety of quantum systems. Using micro- and nanoscale cavities fabricated from single crystal diamond, we have shown that NV centre quantum memories can be addressed optomechanically. The resulting spin-photon interface does not rely upon direct optical transitions, and is a first step towards connecting solid state spins to telecommunication wavelength quantum networks. These devices also allow routine coherent storage of light in the mechanical motion of the diamond resonator, and are a convenient platform for exploring multimode coherent optomechanics.
