Quantum Optics Seminar: Johannes Borregaard
Quantum processing enhanced optical imaging
Maximizing information extraction from weak optical signals is critical for applications spanning molecular to astronomical imaging. In this presentation, I will introduce a novel protocol that inputs weak optical signals into quantum processors, enabling the sorting of signals from unresolved sources and the individual estimation of their general observables. Applying this approach to the longstanding challenge of exoplanet imaging, I will demonstrate that orders-of-magnitude improvements in signal-to-noise ratio are conceivable under realistic stellar imaging conditions. Notably, the required photon-to-qubit mapping functionality has been demonstrated using solid-state defect centers, opening the possibility for near-term demonstrations with current hardware.
