Beyond the null hypothesis: Physics-driven searches for cosmic-ray and neutrino sources

The fields of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays and high-energy neutrinos are currently benefitting for large-scale experimental efforts, with evidence building for associations with astrophysical sources. However, definitely identifying these sources and interpreting these results in the larger multi-messenger picture remains challenging. In this talk, I present statistical analyses techniques to address these challenges and make the most of the existing data by including more information. I demonstrate the impact of such approaches via applications to ultra-high-energy cosmic ray and high-energy neutrino source searches. In particular, I discuss a different approach to source discovery, solutions to pitfalls associated with trial factors and the complementarity of Bayesian and frequentist approaches.
