Long-term visitor to Strong Group
The Strong Group has the pleasure of welcoming Associate Professor at Beijing University of Technology, Theoretical Physics Department, Ding-fang Zeng to visit for a year at NBI in Copenhagen.
Effective Field Theory (EFT) techniques have percolated from high-energy physics to gravitational physics, and are now an important tool to predict and parametrize new effects in physics.
During his one-year stay, Dr. Dingfang will use EFT techniques to explore the dynamics of compact binaries and consequences for gravitational-wave physics. In particular, he will address the issue of black hole polarizability, which overlaps with the interests by the strong group: in standard classical General Relativity, black holes have vanishing Love numbers, although this property is not a consequence of any known symmetry. It is therefore valuable to use gravitational wave observations, from the inspiral and merger of compact objects, to constrain the Love number of black holes. This will be done using also expertise at Strong.
Ding-fang Zeng will join the Strong Group from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023.
