A strong team visits IHES
Recently, two members of the Strong Group, Gregorio Carullo and Marina De Amicis, traveled to the quaint town of Bures-sur-Yvette, near Paris, to visit the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES). The purpose of the visit, funded by two Balzan Prize fellowship awards, was to discuss topics ranging from late-time tails in post-merger binary black hole coalescences to the dynamical excitation of quasi-normal modes with Emeritus Professor Thibault Damour.
Throughout their stay, Marina and Gregorio had the opportunity to collaborate in person with other colleagues, Alessandro Nagar, Sebastiano Bernuzzi, Simone Albanesi, Andrea Placidi, and many others, experts in numerical relativity, perturbation theory and the effective one body approach to the two body problem in general relativity.
They attended a seminar on 'Einstein’s path to General Relativity' by Professor Damour as well as an introductory lecture on Numerical Relativity by Professor Bernuzzi. Gregorio Carullo delivered a talk titled 'Black Hole Spectroscopy: From a Mathematical Problem to an Observational Reality.'
The visit to IHES proved to be an enriching experience, full of fierce and insightful discussions devoted to deepening our understanding of ringdown, and granting the opportunity to start many fruitful collaborations.
